Understand the matchup
What 6-3-1 B is trying to create
A six-player defensive line closes the box while the midfield three protect second balls and the lone striker threatens isolated counters.
A formation name is only the first clue. Confirm the opponent’s game plan, likely eleven, venue, fitness and match objective before choosing a response.
Tactical reasoning
Why these responses may work
- Controlled circulation keeps the opponent pinned without repeatedly losing the ball.
- Three forwards create width against the six-player line.
- A holding midfielder protects the space behind prolonged attacks.
Theory-based and provisional with low confidence. Variant-specific evidence is insufficient for a unique “best” formula.

Reference point: Start at 55 / 59 / 55 to keep the three phases balanced.
Watch for: Use two natural forwards and four playable midfielders; improvised positions weaken the structure.

Reference point: Start at 42 / 45 / 55. Severe underdogs can test 30–35 / 20–30 / 65–70.
Watch for: Avoid this as a default against 4-4-2 B Passing. Long-range volume can also become sterile against an elite goalkeeper.

Venue adjustments
Home and away changes
At home
At home, use the upper half of the style band only when your XI is clearly stronger and the lone counter outlet is controlled.
Away
Away, prioritize rest defence and patient switches of play over maximum pressure.
When not to use it
Situations that should change the plan
- The opponent changes to a more attacking formation before kickoff.
- You use a direct-chase setup with too much match time remaining.
- Your natural positions do not support the selected attacking family.
Alternative formations
Other coherent responses
4-3-3 A
Your wingers and full-backs can create sustained width safely.
4-2-4 A
The match is a must-score scenario and you accept the counter risk.
Final switches
Tackling, marking and offside still depend on context
Tackling does not become more aggressive just because a formation is a counter. Start from Normal, move toward Careful for strict referees and accept more aggression only when the card risk is justified.
Zonal marking and no offside trap are the robust defaults shown in most setups. A deep back five and an offside trap ask the defensive line to do opposite things.
