Understand the matchup

What you are trying to stop

Wide overloads with an advanced central creator can pin your back line and attack the spaces beside midfield.

A formation name is only the first clue. Confirm the opponent’s game plan, likely eleven, venue, fitness and match objective before choosing a response. The ranges below are coherent starting points, not automatic hard counters.

Read the sliders

Three controls, three different jobs

Pressing
How aggressively the team tries to disrupt possession and recover the ball.
Style
The overall defensive-to-attacking risk posture and spatial commitment.
Tempo
The speed and directness of circulation after your team wins or keeps the ball.

Watch for: Avoid this as a default against 4-4-2 B Passing. Long-range volume can also become sterile against an elite goalkeeper.

Watch for: This shape deliberately concedes midfield. Use natural wide forwards and keep the low block coherent.

Before you save

Final switches still depend on the match

Keep tackling tied to the referee and your tolerance for cards. Careful is the safer starting point under a very strict referee; Normal is the neutral default; only accept more aggression when the official and match context justify the additional variance.

Zonal marking and Offside Trap No are the robust defaults shown above. Deep back fives and low blocks should not try to step up for an offside trap: the two ideas ask the defensive line to move in opposite directions.
