Against a wide front three
Includes 4-3-3 A/B and 3-4-3.
- If stronger: retain attacking identity with 4-3-3 B or attack their three defenders with 4-3-3 A.
- If equal: add midfield/control through 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1.
- If weaker: use 5-2-3, 5-3-2, or 5-4-1 depending the gap.
- Protect the full-back zones and do not combine a fragile back line with maximum aggression.
Against a midfield overload
Includes 4-5-1, 4-2-3-1, 3-5-2, and 3-3-2-2.
- If your wide attack is strong, stretch the pitch with 4-3-3 A or 4-4-2 A.
- If weaker, contest density with 4-5-1/4-2-3-1 or bypass it through a coherent counter/direct system.
- Do not attempt patient central possession with only two weak midfielders.
Against five or six defenders
- First distinguish the opponent’s intent: a passive 5-3-2/back five and a 5-2-3 Counter are not the same matchup.
- Against a passive 5-3-2, a stronger team can use 4-3-3 B Wing Play to stretch the block.
- Against 5-2-3 Counter, prefer controlled 4-3-3 B Passing when stronger to reduce transition turnovers.
- Start with controlled 4-3-3 A/B or 4-4-2 width.
- Keep enough midfield/rest defence to suppress counters.
- Increase Style or midfield support before abandoning structure.
- Use 4-2-4 only when the match state makes the extra risk rational.
Against Counter Attack
- Keep defenders deep by default.
- Do not automatically use Attacking Full-backs.
- Prefer 4-3-3 B, 4-4-2 B, or 4-2-3-1 control.
- Patient territory is better than creating the transition game the opponent wants.
Against Wing Play
- Use a back four or five plus midfield cover.
- Favor strong natural full-backs.
- Avoid a narrow three-man defence unless your quality advantage is decisive.
Against Shoot on Sight
- Contest the midfield with 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2 B, or 4-5-1.
- Goalkeeper and midfield quality matter.
- Do not confuse the opponent’s shot count with chance quality; evaluate shots on target and the result pattern.
Against Long Ball
- Retain four or five defenders.
- Use strong central defenders and goalkeeper.
- Avoid a reckless high line or untested offside trap.
- If their midfield is deliberately bypassed, winning possession there is useful only if your system creates threat afterward.
Escalation ladder when you must score
Escalate in this order:
- Move Style toward the upper end of the current tactic’s band.
- Change midfield from Stay to Push Forward.
- Use Attacking Full-backs if the counter risk is affordable.
- Move from a control formation to 4-3-3 A.
- Use 3-4-3 or 4-2-4 only when desperation justifies the structural cost.
OSM does not normally offer live tactical pivots during the simulated match, so this ladder describes pre-match risk selection for the match state and competition objective, not sideline changes after kickoff.
