Understand the matchup

What 5-2-3 B is trying to create

Five defenders protect the box, two midfielders screen the centre and three forwards stay ready for transitions.

A formation name is only the first clue. Confirm the opponent’s game plan, likely eleven, venue, fitness and match objective before choosing a response.

Tactical reasoning

Why these responses may work

  • Four or three midfielders can control the opponent’s central pair.
  • Patient possession removes the turnovers the front three need.
  • A balanced structure protects against both wide and central counters.
Evidence status

Provisional medium confidence on controlling the thin midfield and low confidence on weaker-team choices.

Reference point: Start at 35 / 25 / 65 when a draw has real value.

Watch for: This is a survival setup with limited comeback capacity. Do not choose it when sustained pressure is essential.

Venue adjustments

Home and away changes

At home

At home, add style only after the midfield control is established.

Away

Away, stay closer to the reference values and avoid speculative passes into the back five.

When not to use it

Situations that should change the plan

  • You push both full-backs and all sliders upward.
  • The opponent’s three forwards are much stronger than your defensive line.
  • You are weaker and select a possession plan without the midfield to execute it.

Alternative formations

Other coherent responses

4-2-3-1

Your attacking midfielder can exploit the space ahead of the back five.

4-3-3 A

You are clearly stronger and natural wingers can pin the wide defenders.

Final switches

Tackling, marking and offside still depend on context

Tackling does not become more aggressive just because a formation is a counter. Start from Normal, move toward Careful for strict referees and accept more aggression only when the card risk is justified.

Zonal marking and no offside trap are the robust defaults shown in most setups. A deep back five and an offside trap ask the defensive line to do opposite things.
