Understand the matchup

What 3-4-3 B is trying to create

Three attackers pin the defensive line while four midfielders support pressure and the back three accept transition risk.

A formation name is only the first clue. Confirm the opponent’s game plan, likely eleven, venue, fitness and match objective before choosing a response.

Tactical reasoning

Why these responses may work

  • A holding midfielder protects the centre behind your attacks.
  • Balanced two-forward occupation can test the back three.
  • A back five gives weaker teams numerical cover against the front three.
Evidence status

Provisional low-to-medium confidence. The exact A/B distinction has limited public evidence, so the guide states the shared structural logic.

Normal by default; move toward Careful as the referee becomes stricter. More aggression is a risk choice, not part of the formation counter itself.

Reference point: Start at 38 / 27 / 66 for a conservative back-five counter.

Watch for: The setup has limited midfield control and should not be used as a favourite by default.

Venue adjustments

Home and away changes

At home

At home, use measured pressure against the back three without exposing both full-back zones.

Away

Away, keep the defensive instructions conservative and use tempo for transitions rather than constant pressure.

When not to use it

Situations that should change the plan

  • The opponent’s midfield four is clearly stronger and your setup cannot retain the ball.
  • You raise pressing beyond what fitness and venue support.
  • You use the same response without checking the opponent game plan.

Alternative formations

Other coherent responses

4-2-3-1

A central creator can attack the space ahead of the back three.

5-3-2

Your two forwards are better outlets than three wide attackers.

Final switches

Tackling, marking and offside still depend on context

Tackling does not become more aggressive just because a formation is a counter. Start from Normal, move toward Careful for strict referees and accept more aggression only when the card risk is justified.

Zonal marking and no offside trap are the robust defaults shown in most setups. A deep back five and an offside trap ask the defensive line to do opposite things.
