Understand the matchup
What 4-3-3 B is trying to create
The holding midfielder creates stable passing triangles and protects the opponent against central counters.
A formation name is only the first clue. Confirm the opponent’s game plan, likely eleven, venue, fitness and match objective before choosing a response.

Tactical reasoning
Why these responses may work
- A compact five-man midfield can close the central triangles around the holding midfielder.
- Wide pressure from 4-3-3 A can attack outside the central screen when your XI is stronger.
- A layered 4-2-3-1 keeps central numbers without surrendering all attacking support.
The weaker-team 4-5-1 family has the strongest support in the current model; other tiers remain context-sensitive starting points.

- Tackling
- Normal by default; move toward Careful as the referee becomes stricter. More aggression is a risk choice, not part of the formation counter itself.
Reference point: Start at 70 / 70 / 67 when the XI advantage is clear.
Watch for: The shape becomes fragile when both full-backs advance and possession is lost cheaply.

- Normal by default; move toward Careful as the referee becomes stricter. More aggression is a risk choice, not part of the formation counter itself.
Reference point: Start at 53 / 49 / 58 and choose the game plan from your midfield quality.
Watch for: The lone striker needs support from a strong attacking midfielder; density alone does not create chances.

Reference point: Start at 42 / 45 / 55. Severe underdogs can test 30–35 / 20–30 / 65–70.
Watch for: Avoid this as a default against 4-4-2 B Passing. Long-range volume can also become sterile against an elite goalkeeper.

Venue adjustments
Home and away changes
At home
At home, a similar-strength team can use the upper half of the 4-2-3-1 style range if the attacking midfielder is a genuine strength.
Away
Away, stay close to the reference setup and protect central spacing before increasing pressing.
When not to use it
Situations that should change the plan
- Your fifth midfielder is materially weaker than the available forward or defender.
- The opponent is using 4-3-3 B as a shell for an unusually direct plan you have not accounted for.
- You are a clear favourite but choose an underdog block that removes your territorial advantage.
Alternative formations
Other coherent responses
5-3-2
The opponent has two exceptional wide forwards and your own front two are the best outlets.
4-4-2 B
You have two natural forwards and want a balanced equal-strength response.
Final switches
Tackling, marking and offside still depend on context
Tackling does not become more aggressive just because a formation is a counter. Start from Normal, move toward Careful for strict referees and accept more aggression only when the card risk is justified.
Zonal marking and no offside trap are the robust defaults shown in most setups. A deep back five and an offside trap ask the defensive line to do opposite things.
