Matchday guide

Strength and risk classifier

Classify the fixture before choosing how much tactical risk to accept.
01

Use the starting XI—not squad value

Total squad value can be distorted by a large or expensive bench. Compare the players likely to influence the match.

Calculate:

XI average = sum of likely starter ratings / 11
Relative difference = (my XI average − opponent XI average) / opponent XI average

Then compare the lines separately:

  • GK vs opponent attack
  • Defence vs opponent attack
  • Midfield vs opponent midfield
  • Attack vs opponent defence/GK

A match with equal XI averages is not truly even when one team has a decisive midfield advantage and the other has the stronger defence and attack.

02

Context adjustments

Reclassify one step against yourself when:

  • you are away against a meaningful Pitch upgrade;
  • the opponent has used a Training Camp;
  • a key player is unavailable;
  • several starters have poor fitness or morale;
  • Secret Training makes opponent information unreliable.

Reclassify one step in your favor when the reverse is true. Do not convert a claimed percentage boost directly into displayed player rating; OSM’s coefficients are not public.

03

Strategic objective changes risk

Objective Risk rule
Win is mandatory Begin one tier more aggressive than normal
Draw is valuable Prefer control/compactness over extra shot volume
Protect goal difference Avoid desperation shapes and unnecessary card risk
Need large win Raise aggression sequentially; do not jump blindly to maximum risk
Knockout with penalties possible Preserve enough defensive stability and use the best penalty specialist
